An Ode to the Mini

April 29, 2022
By Sophie Andreesen

2022 is the summer of the mini – a bit overstated, I know, but from the words of Harper’s Bazaar to the everywhere-and-back Miu Miu micro-skirt (you know the one) the thigh-baring style brings about a new joy to dressing.

Emerging from a covid-era hideaway, I was bound to define my personal style as laid-back, effortless, and truthfully, a bit boyish. Think: baseball caps, jeans and a jacket of sorts; a fool-proof uniform. But with a new joie de vie this summer from a return back to normalcy, comes an opportunity to test out the feminine silhouette. The mini feels to be the perfect match for new adventures, bringing confidence and playfulness all while creating the appearance of an elongated frame. How could you not muse over it?

So as I make space for tinier hems in my closet, here are a few styling tips that make embracing the trend all the easier (and more chic!)

Teamed with boots

It’s a bittersweet moment when beloved winter styles, such as leather boots, are put into storage during the seasonal wardrobe rotation – a typical occurrence when dealing with New York’s space-conscious closets.

Enter the mini. The leggy design gives all the more reason to hang onto your boots that much longer. Knee-high styles exaggerate the long line, while giving just a peek of skin for a bit more mystery. Use it as a chance to indulge in the western boot trend, or maybe you opt for a mid-calf pairing. In my opinion, boots and minis were made for eachother.

Take on Color

The A-line black mini skirt has defined itself as a classique in a sea of consistently new renditions, but by no means does that make it boring. Lean into its versatility, by using it as a backdrop for bright pops of color whether seen in your accessories, top or a jacket.

Play Up Proportions

Many trends can feel like they’re accompanied with a list of rules and exclusions for wear… “don’t do this”, “don’t style with that”, “you can only pair with this when –fill in the blank”. But the mini offers a new sense of freedom.

Though the hem is short, don’t be afraid to pair with jackets or cardigans of similar length. The matching proportions bring an intentionality that avoids feeling cliche. On the opposite side of the spectrum, test out styling it with a cropped blouse or blazer. The mini exudes fun, don’t tie yourself to imaginary constraints.
