Earth Day

April 22, 2022

Our team is constantly learning about the effects of the fashion industry on our ecosystem. This Earth Day, we at Dora Maar are excited to share some important fashion facts and to show you some ways we think about sustainability as a company mission, that you could easily incorporate into your own shopping habits.

Circular Fashion

The global fashion industry has grown at a tremendous pace in the last century, leaving us with so many unwanted garments that many are sent to landfill each day, mostly in developing countries who are forced to receive them. Textiles can take up to 200+ years to decompose in landfills, while the alternative of burning them causes enormous amounts of air pollution.

In recent years, luxury brands have begun to think about their fashion circularity, which means considering the full lifecycle of a piece to ensure as little waste as possible. For brands like Prada, this looked like releasing their Re-Nylon collection in 2019, made from their Re-Nylon textile constructed from recycled plastic ocean waste, fishing nets, and textile waste. In 2021, Balenciaga’s contribution was constructing 93.5% of their SS21 collection from upcycled or certified sustainable textiles.

Why Pre-Owned?

Today, the average consumer buys 60% more clothing than we did even 15 years ago. Buying pre-owned luxury fashion is a way of closing the loop in a circular fashion economy and ensuring we don’t add more pressure to our ecosystem as we work to regenerate it, while still being free to shop.

Buying pre-owned luxury fashion is a way of closing the loop in a circular fashion economy.

Luxury fashion represents the best quality manufacturing combined with the best design of each era, and so many vintage pieces are able to withstand the test of time and wear, meaning they should be worn forever. When considering our purchases, we want to encourage everyone to think about the full life-cycle of their garment, from where it came to where it might end up. Each piece that passes through Dora Maar is given an extra life and an opportunity to be passed down to future generations of conscious fashion consumers.

We all deserve to have nice things, but this doesn’t mean they have to be brand new. We love that our Dora Maar family is a part of these conscious fashion conversations and hope to demonstrate through our carefully curated pieces and process how special (and good for our planet!) buying pre-owned luxury can be.
