Here’s Why and How to Achieve a Pinterest-Worthy Closet

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to invest time into organizing or re-organizing your closet - Pinterest-worthy style! Similarly to how Dora Maar’s Head of Fashion, Brian Solis noted in the Coveteur piece, The Expert’s Guide to Maintaining Your Vintage Fashion, a large part of having a stellar wardrobe is caring for your clothing and being organized is a crucial piece of that pie.

The Why

Here's why this is important: it’s proven that organized spaces lead to increased happiness and productivity in all aspects of your life. Just think, when you know exactly where your new Markarian piece is, you can pair it easier with your new Missoni shirt and top it off with your Alexis Bittar earrings. Both your space and mind are ‘de-cluttered.’ Every item has a place. In turn, your other areas of life - from work to health - will feel more balanced. Mary Cornetta, Founder and Owner of Sort and Sweet Inc notes, “Organizing your closet is incredibly important because it helps to set your day off on the right foot. Being able to easily reach in for the outfit that will make you feel your best and finding it easily is something everyone deserves to have. It will save you time, money, and stress.”

The time I put into rearranging, decluttering, and structuring has had an incredibly strong return on investment.

From a personal standpoint, I feel vehemently about imparting my passion for closet organizing as I recently worked with a true talent and life-changer - Barbara Fight, founder of Organically Organized NYC. The time I put into rearranging, decluttering, and structuring has had an incredibly strong return on investment. Not only is my space far more visually appealing, but I’m more productive and cheery in my little haven. My clothes are naturally better taken care of (no more stuffing favorite items into the back of the closets), I can put together outfits far more easily than before and even packing for a trip has become an enjoyable process.

The How

To help you all, we consulted Mary Cornetta Founder and Owner of Sort and Sweet Inc and blogger at Organized Overall. Here, she shares 5 quick tips to get started:

1. sort

Pull everything out of your closet and sort into categories (i.e. jeans with jeans, dresses with dresses)

2. cleanse

Make bags for items that no longer fit you or your style (consider donating, consigning or reselling to contribute to the circular economy of fashion)

3. organize

Organize the clothing back into your closet so that it flows well (i.e. casual clothing with casual, fancy with fancy)

4. store

Purchase new supplies such as matching hangers or bins if you need them. “I find that having everything contained and matchy matchy makes me want to keep my space more organized!” Mary notes.

5. maintain

Declutter and reorganize on a regular basis (aim for 2-4 times per year, line it up with the start of each season)
