Mom in the Making Style Guide
with creative director @ingaodette
I am not above buying or wearing maternity clothes. There seems to be this agreement between moms in the fashion world that maternity clothes are not chic, but some sort of last resort if you don’t know how to dress yourself. I love my Nike maternity shorts and my Hatch maternity pajamas. The extra space in my Nike shorts makes my belly look really cute, hugging me in all the right places. My Hatch pajamas are the most comfortable thing I have ever worn.
What I do not love is the fact that maternity pieces are so overpriced for the quality you are getting, and the styles are usually the same– think flowy wrap dresses in the same typical colorways. It sometimes feels really hard to put together an outfit that truly speaks to who you are. So, here’s my take on a few different looks for occasions where I am using non maternity clothes- and let me tell you a little bit about why I think it works. Pregnant or not pregnant!
An outfit perfect for running errands:
Think comfort– add a pair of sneakers and a belt to cinch the waist so you don’t feel too big or garbage bag-esque. This dress features an interesting placement of buttons, with the adjustable nature allowing as much leg or neckline as you want. And, the color gives a perfect pop! Or if you’re feeling less pop centric, the dress also comes in black.
I'm wearing an Asymmetrical Button Down Dress in Dijon from CO from the closet of @alexandraloeb. The Padded Cassette Bag in White from Bottega Veneta is from the closet of @christyrilling and a Gucci Buckle belt from the closet of @jessicateves
An outfit perfect for work
A classic button-down, shirt or dress, is a must. I live in my Saks Potts shirts, and now, this Sacai shirt dress.
It’s masculine while feminine, with contrasting details on the side. Make it edgy with the boots, or style with ballerina flats for a more feminine option.
An outfit perfect for date night
A little stretch goes a long way, not to mention the ability to breath. Elongate your legs with a pair of nude, open-toe shoes. Nothing wrong with a little sexy.
Here I am wearing Celine by Phoebe Philo Knit Fringe Trim Tunic Dress from the closet of @xanderrjohnson, Celine
Platform Sandals in Brown From the closet of @cata_gonzalez_j & Mark Cross Round Leather Crossbody Bag in Tan from the closet of @theimpeccablefind
An outfit perfect for a wedding
Again, think long legs and the ability to breath. Plus, the cape provides a built-in, over-the-shoulders cardigan for those highly air-conditioned venues.
